First pregnancy signs: Are you wondering if you are pregnant…? Most pregnancy tests won’t tell you for sure until you actually missed your period, but there are a lot of signs and symptoms of early pregnancy that may point to the possibility.
When you are pregnant, your belly will grow to make space for your baby - this is the most obvious change in your body. But there is so much more to it! Your body is amazing, and prepares for the birth and pregnancy in a much more complex and magnificent way.
Responsible for most of the changes in your body are your hormones. Estrogen and Progesterone are the chief pregnancy hormones and they play an important role in helping your baby to develop. The sudden rise of these hormones even during very early pregnancy can cause some very typical symptoms of early pregnancy.
1. Food aversions
Most women experience changes in their taste and smell during pregnancy. Maybe you used to be a coffee addict but suddenly can’t even stand the smell of a latte? Or you used to love eggs Benedict but now even the thought of it triggers your gag reflex? Some women even report a metallic taste in their mouth. These sudden food aversions might be one of your very early pregnancy symptoms!
2. Frequent urination
Your body is preparing for your growing baby and hormonal changes cause an increase in rate of blood flow to your kidneys, and because that means you bladders fills up more quickly, you subsequently need to go to the bathroom more often. It might be a good idea to get used to this, because most likely this will not be getting better until after the birth - if anything it will get worse because during the later stages of pregnancy, your growing baby will also put pressure on your bladder.
3. Emotional Rollercoaster & mood swings
The hormonal changes don’t only prepare your body physically for your baby, but can also effect your emotionally. Hormones flood your body in early pregnancy and can make you unusually emotional.
4. Fatigue and exhaustion
Many women feel very tired and sleepy during the early stages of their pregnancy. Nobody really knows what is causing the tiredness, but it is suspected that the increasing levels of the hormone progesterone may be contributing to your tiredness. If this is your first pregnancy, take advantage of it and make sure your body gets the extra rest it needs.
5. Nausea Pregnancy & morning sickness

6. Abdominal Bloating
The hormonal changes might cause bloating, something that many women also experience just before their period. Maybe your clothes feel a little tight, but during the very early stages of your pregnancy, this has nothing to do with the size of your baby or uterus - which are both still very small.
7. Sore breasts
Your body is preparing to supply milk to the baby, and many women experience sensitive sore or swollen breasts even very early during their pregnancy.
8 High basal body temperature
If you are charting your basal body temperature, you know that it is usually rising in the days prior to ovulation. After you have ovulated, the temperature will decline again, unless that is if you are pregnant. In this case your basal body temperature will stay elevated.
9 Light spotting
Some women experience light spotting, which is also known as implantation bleeding. This can happen when the fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus which is about 10 to 14 days after conception, around the time you would get your menstrual period if you weren’t pregnant, so it can be a bit confusing, but implantation bleeding is much lighter than menstrual bleeding.
10. Missed period
If your are usually very regular, but your period has not arrived in time, then this can be a sign of pregnancy. But theoretically, there could be many other factors that delay your period, for example if you have been sick and taken medication, or if you have experienced stress or anxiety, or if you have lost a large amount of weight, or have exercised excessively. So these are some common symptoms during early pregnancy, but even if you experience some of them, it does not necessarily mean that you are actually pregnant, for example t could just meant that you are about to have your period, or getting sick. On the other hand you might actually be pregnant, but experience none of these early pregnancy signs.
